Minutes of
Meeting, 1-15-06
Those present: Lee Freeman, Jim Ingrum, Iva McClure,
Judy Tiffin, Hester Cope, Bill McDonald, Mary Peck, Brett Wood, Betty
Champion, Carolyn Waterman, Billy Warren
- Billy Warren welcomed everyone and thanked them for
attending the annual meeting of Heritage Preservation, Inc.
- Billy Warren:
- Distributed and reviewed copies of a document
entitled “Accomplishments of Heritage Preservation, Inc – 2005” and
another entitled ‘Goals of Heritage Preservation, Inc. – 2006”;
- Distributed a paper with the web address for HPI (www.florencehistorical.org)
and encouraged everyone to visit it; and
- Thanked Vince Brewton for setting up and
diligently maintaining HPI’s website.
- Bill McDonald made the motion that this slate of
people be approved as members of the Board of Directors of HPI, class of
2008: Jerry Dowd, Lee Freeman, Jim Ingrum, Iva McClure and Judy Tiffin.
Betty Champion seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.
- Billy Warren introduced these Board members to a
round of hearty applause:

- Billy Warren presented the program on the topic,
“Advantages of Living/Owning Property in National Historic Districts.” As
part of his presentation, he distributed and reviewed copies of these
documents:
- Walking tour guide to Florence’s historic
districts
- Florence’s design guidelines for properties in
national historic districts
- Tax incentives for income-producing properties in
national historic districts
- Billy Warren stated that the proposed Historic
Homeownerships Assistance Act has been presented to Congress. It will
create tax incentives for owners of private residences in national
historic districts and, as such, will be the greatest boon to historic
preservation that the U.S. has ever known. He urged everyone to support
the passage of this bill by contacting Bud Cramer, Richard Shelby and Jeff
Sessions.
- Heritage Preservation, Inc. proudly presented its
annual Capital Award to the following recipients:
- Iva and Chester McClure – Individual category
- Sherry and Billy Smith – Residential category
- University of North Alabama (Coby Hall) –
Commercial category
- Dr. Dan Howard from the University of North Alabama
made a power point presentation on the restoration of Coby Hall, followed
by another on the proposed restoration of Rogers Hall. Today marked the
official public announcement that the restoration of Rogers Hall will be
done!
- Hester Cope announced that officials from “If Walls
Could Talk, “ a program on HGTV, have contacted her about featuring a
local house during whose restoration artifacts might have been
discovered. She asked that anyone who has such a story contact her
immediately so she can contact HGTV.
