(Annual Meeting)

 

1.      Billy Warren welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming to the annual meeting of HPI.

 

2.      Billy Warren called attention to:

a.       The continuous running on the television of the DVD, “Follow the River:  A History of Florence and Lauderdale County”;

b.      The availability, for $10 each, of “Follow the River…” on both DVD and audio CD;

c.       The sign-in sheets and encouraged everyone to list their name, U.S. mail address and e-mail address;

d.      The color photographs of the old Coca-Cola sign which has been located at a business establishment in Florence; and

e.       The color photographs and printed material on the restoration of the Bailey Springs Cemetery and the erection of a historic marker at Camp Westmoreland.

 

3.      Bob Torbert presented a PowerPoint on the restoration of the cemeteries in Lauderdale County which he has undertaken as the county’s representative to the Alabama Historic Cemeteries Preservation Alliance.  He noted that the next project is the restoration of the Wilson Family Cemetery adjacent to Blackberry Trail Golf Course.  He will work with Chris Cassell, a young man who is pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout, on this project.

 

4.      Lee Freeman distributed and briefly reviewed copies of a document entitled “A New Cemetery Law,” which details the new law in Alabama that requires owners of properties that contain cemeteries to allow public access to the cemeteries.

 

5.      Pat Mahan described her role as the webmaster of the Lauderdale County website which is part of the national genealogical website.  She encouraged everyone to use the site and to submit possible additions to her.  One of her goals is to have a complete listing of all cemeteries in Lauderdale County and of all names from gravestones in these cemeteries on this website.

 

6.      John Baptiste Sannoner (aka William Freeman), brother of Ferdinand Sannoner, made an appearance to encourage everyone to attend HPI’s third Cemetery Stroll scheduled for April, 2008.  It was a superb performance.

 

7.      Billy Warren distributed and briefly reviewed copies of the these documents:

a.       Heritage Preservation, Inc.”:  Accomplishments – 2007;

b.      Heritage Preservation, Inc.: Goals – 2008; and

c.       Property Listings:  National Register of Historic Places.

 

8.      Billy Warren presented the Capital Award in the following categories to the recipients indicated:

a.       Commercial – Mr. Robert Bunch and Mr. Joey James, Attorneys at Law

b.      Institutional/Governmental – Dr. William Cale, University of North Alabama (Rogers Hall)

c.       Individual – David Mackay

d.      Junior – Davis Faulkner

 

9.      Members of the HPI Board invited everyone to enjoy refreshments following the adjournment of the meeting.
