  1. Bill McDonald and Lee Freeman reported that the history video is in its final editing.  (Jerry Dowd is at work on it even as we are meeting.)  Both agreed that the end product will be a source of pride for all of us.  Bill stated that we must find an appropriate way to thank Nelson Starkey, Bobby Denton and Lynn Greer for securing the funding for this excellent project.

  2. Susan Hargett and Mary Peck reported that the project to photograph all homes in the Wood Avenue Historic District will begin soon.

  3. Billy Warren reported that Main Street's 2004 calendar featuring historic downtown residences went on sale Friday, October 24.  They are very professionally done and are a real bargain at $5.00 each.

  4. Billy Warren reported that he conducted a walking tour of Wilson Park and the buildings surrounding it on October 14.  Members of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary for women teachers, took the tour.

  5. Billy Warren complimented Vince Brewton for the wonderful job he is doing as webmaster for HPI's web site.  Vince suggested that minutes of HPI's Board meetings be added to the site.  Billy Warren will send the minutes to him electronically so they can easily be added each month.

  6. Billy Warren distributed copies of the letter to Mayor Jordan and City Council members, drafted by Mary Peck, asking that an ordinance be adopted which would require a public hearing before a historic property is razed.  After the group discussed the letter, Charlotte Dean suggested that the term "historic properties" be defined within it.  It was agreed that the definition included in President Bush's Executive Order 13287 should be used.  When that is done, Billy Warren will mail the letter to the Mayor and Council members.  Plaudits to Mary for an excellent letter!

  7. Billy Warren distributed copies of President Bush's Executive Order 13287 so everyone would have a file copy.

  8. Lindsey Stricklin, Charlotte Dean and Mary Peck reported that the Archives Action Team is searching for a building to house artifacts from Bradshaw and Coffee High Schools – even temporarily.  The team is drafting a letter to be sent to various individuals asking for help in its search and asks that HPI write a letter of support to be attached to its letter.  It was agreed that this project might be the impetus needed to get an archival center established to house items related to the history of Florence and Lauderdale County.  Charlotte Dean made the motion that the letter of support be written.  Jim Ingrum seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

  9. Hester Cope (in absentia) suggested that we invite Dr. Dan Howard from UNA to meet with us to discuss UNA's plans for expansion.  Mary Peck made the motion that Dan be invited.  Margaret Taylor seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

  10. Vince Brewton announced that the Diamonds and Duds Gala, a fundraiser for West Way Child Development Center, will be held in the Rogers Department Store building on Thursday evening, November 20.  Tickets are $35 each.

  11. Lindsey Stricklin reported that our liability insurance premium ($263) has been paid to Rogers, Carlton Insurance Agency.

  12. Because of time constraints, no further action was taken on the list of local craftspersons.
