Minutes of Meeting, 12-13-04

 

Those presents:  Mary Peck, Judy Tiffin, Bob Tiffin, Lee Freeman, Jim Ingrum, Iva McClure, Hester Cope, Charlotte Dean, Susan Hargett, Betty Champion, Billy Warren

 

  1. Billy Warren and other Board members thanked Judy and Bob Tiffin for their gracious invitation for the Board to have lunch along with its monthly meeting at their beautiful home on Wood Avenue.

     
  2. Jim Ingrum made the motion that the minutes of the 11-22-04 meeting be approved.  Betty Champion seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

     
  3. Billy Warren presented this treasurer’s report:
    1. Checking Account balance                                $6,174.03
    2. Forks of Cypress Account balance                     3,223.38   +  11.40

 

Charlotte Dean made the motion that the report be approved.   Hester Cope seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

 

  1. Billy Warren reported that the HPI Board has placed the book, Victorian Cottage Architecture by George F. Barber, in the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library in memory of Robert A. Tiffin, Sr.

     
  2. Billy Warren reported that these people have accepted their nomination as Board members for the class of 2007 – to be confirmed at the annual meeting on January 16, 2005:
    1. Vince Brewton
    2. Betty Champion
    3. Charlotte Dean
    4. Billy Warren
    5. Carolyn Waterman

       
  3. In a discussion about the unexpired term of Lindsey Stricklin (class of 2006), it was decided that Billy Warren should invite Brett Wood to join the Board.  If Brett declines, Betty Champion will invite Faye Abramson.

     
  4. Billy Warren reported that Nancy Gonce has accepted HPI’s offer for a report on the proposed National Cultural Heritage Area to be the featured program (30-40 minutes) at HPI’s annual meeting on Sunday, January 16, 2005 (Sunday, January 23, in case of inclement weather).

     
  5. Regarding the annual meeting, these agreements were reached:
    1. It will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Richards Education Center (the offices of Florence City Board of Education) 541 Riverview Drive.
    2. Betty Champion will coordinate the procuring and serving of refreshments for the meeting.  Several members of the Board volunteered to assist her.

       
  6. It was agreed that the Capital Award should be given to these people:
    1. Individual – Ronald Pettus and Dick Jordan
    2. Residential – Andrea and Tommy Coats
    3. Commercial – Michael Cole (Nolen Cole Art Gallery)

       
  7. For Main Street, Hester Cope made this report:
    1. The annual Open House in downtown Florence on Friday, December 3, was a grand success.
    2. The annual Christmas parade in downtown Florence on Friday, December 10, was, likewise, a rousing success.
    3. There will soon be an exciting retail business opening in downtown Florence.
    4. A group visited our Main Street program recently from downtown Decatur.  They wanted ideas for making their own downtown more viable, and they were very pleased with what they saw in downtown Florence.

       
  8. Billy Warren thanked Vince Brewton for adding the prices of the VHS and DVD of “Follow the River”, and the local establishments where these can be purchased, to HPI’s web site.

     
  9. It was agreed that Mayor Bobby Irons, Councilman Sam Pendleton (District 1) and Councilman Scott Carrier (District 2) should be invited to our annual meeting in January and that the two Councilmen should be invited to the HPI Board meeting in February for a conversation about historic preservation in their districts.

     
  10. Billy Warren distributed copies of an article from the National Trust for Historic Preservation entitled “African-American Historic Places Initiative:  Working to Document Places, Facilitate Partnerships.”

     
  11. Because of time constraints, there was  no discussion on the possible Florence Cemetery Stroll.
