Minutes of Meeting, 12-15-03

 

Those present:  Judy Tiffin, Mary Peck, Milly Wright, Jim Ingrum, Hester Cope, Bill McDonald, Lee Freeman, Iva McClure, Vince Brewton, Billy Warren

 

  1. Vince Brewton made the motion that the minutes of the 11-24-03 meeting be approved.  Lee Freeman seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

     
  2. Because of the absence of Lindsey Stricklin, there was not a treasurer's report presented to the Board of Directors.

     
  3. Milly Wright made this report for the ad hoc committee that coordinated the development of the video on the history of Florence and Lauderdale County:
    1. Shane Wilson will:

                                                               i.      Provide 40 free VHS tapes of the film to give to those who participated in its production,

                                                             ii.      Provide 2 master copies of the DVD (in XP) that should be kept in a safety deposit box,

                                                            iii.      Provide 1 master copy in a digital video cassette format (for use in duplication),

                                                           iv.      Provide a copy of the raw footage (raw interviews and pictures) on three DVD's, and

                                                             v.      Provide a copy of a CD with all pictures (300 photographs);

    1. Shane Wilson will make a 100-minute audio CD of the interviews, using portions of interviews not included in the film and adding music appropriately.  The cost for the master CD and 50 copies will be $1,200.
    2. Free copies of the video or DVD for school libraries and public libraries will need to be funded by HPI or some other agency.

       
  1. Bill McDonald made the motion that Billy Warren be authorized to write a letter of appreciation to the eight people who oversaw the production of the video on the history of Florence and Lauderdale County.  Jim Ingrum seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

     
  2. Vince Brewton agreed to work with Jerry Dowd and Shane Wilson on the process of duplicating the video.

     
  3. Vince Brewton made the motion that HPI contribute $500 toward the $1,200 required for the master and 50 copies of the audio CD.  Lee Freeman seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

     
  4. Milly Wright stated that Bill McDonald, Kenneth Johnson and she will assemble a printed narrative to coordinate with the history video as a study guide for students and teachers.

     
  5. Milly Wright stated these are the people who oversaw the production of the history video:
    1. Bill McDonald,
    2. Milly Wright,
    3. Mary Nicely,
    4. Jerry Dowd,
    5. Lee Freeman,
    6. Dorothy Hardy, and
    7. Kenneth Johnson.

       
  6. Mary Peck stated that she will begin on the south end of North Wood Avenue taking digital photographs of the houses in the Wood Avenue Historic District.

     
  7. Mary Peck suggested that our web site be linked to Restoreamerica.org.  Vince Brewton stated that he will check into the possibility of doing this.

     
  8. Billy Warren will ask Lindsey Stricklin:
    1. Whether our $150 membership fee to NATA has been paid; and
    2. Whether the renewals of the National Trust magazine for Gary Williamson and the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library have been paid.

       
  9. Billy Warren reported that Tommy Pirkle (Council representative for District 6) has expressed his willingness to assist HPI in promoting the development of an ordinance that would require a public hearing before a structure listed on the National Register can be razed.  Tommy will meet with the HPI Board at its annual meeting on Sunday, January 18.

     
  10. Billy Warren reported that the Bradshaw-Coffee Archives Committee is still searching for a building, or a portion of a building, to house the artifacts from the two schools.  He stated that it might be the impetus needed to establish a Florence-Lauderdale Archival Center.  Vince Brewton suggested that the committee get its request for a building posted in the Times-Daily's section that highlights the specific needs of non-profit groups.  Lee Freeman agreed to check with Chris Osborne to learn how Russellville/Franklin County was successful in establishing an archival center.

     
  11. There was a discussion about the possibility of holding our annual meeting (January 18, 2004) at Richards Center rather than at the Shoals Theater.  The Board confirmed its decision to hold the meeting at the theater.  The first public showing of the history video will be the program for the meeting.  Bill McDonald's book, A Walk Through the Past (on which the video is based), will be for sale at the meeting.

     
  12. Jim Ingrum made the motion that Susan and Billy Hargett and Jackie and Jim Noles be given the Capital Award in the "Residential" category.  Bill McDonald seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

 

Hester Cope made the motion that the University of North Alabama be given the Capital Award in the "Commercial" category for its new pedestrian walkway based on the Ohmstead plans.  Bill McDonald seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

 

Bill McDonald made the motion that Lindsey Stricklin be given the Capital Award in the "Individual" category.  Iva McClure seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

 

  1. Billy Warren reported that the terms of these five Board members end on December 31, 2003:
    1. Hester Cope,
    2. Lindsey Stricklin,
    3. Susan Hargett,
    4. Bill McDonald, and
    5. Mary Peck.

 

Hester, Bill and Mary agreed to serve another three-year term, subject to the vote of the   membership on January 18.  Billy Warren will ask Susan Hargett and Lindsey Stricklin to accept another term.  Should either of them decline, Billy will invite these people to serve (as per their nomination by Board members at today's meeting):

                                                               i.      Ronald Pettus

                                                             ii.      Uhland or Josephine Redd, and

                                                            iii.      Milly Wright.

 

  1. Bill McDonald announced that his newest book, Civil War Tales of the Tennessee Valley, has just been published.

     
  2. Because of time constraints, no additional work was done on the list of local craftspersons.
