that the report be approved. Betty Champion seconded the motion, and it passed

- The opening of the new public library building on
December 10 was noted. It was agreed that the building is a beautiful
structure and its interior space is both attractive and very functional.
- Regarding the annual meeting on Sunday, January 26, it
was suggested that we try to get the Rosenbaum House open for a tour as part
of the meeting. Billy Warren agreed to talk with Mary Nicely at
Kennedy-Douglass Art Center about this possibility. These people agreed to
provide refreshments for the meeting: Betty Champion, Hester Cope, Tom White,
Iva McClure, Lindsey Stricklin.
- After discussion, it was decided that we should give
three Capital Awards this year, one in each of three divisions: Residential,
Commercial, Individual. These will be the recipients:
- Residential – Mary and Tom White
- Commercial – Bo Osborn
- Individual – Jim Ingrum
These people will receive
certificates of recognition for their contributions to historic preservation:
a. Ronald Pettus
b. Lee Freeman
c. Nelson Starkey
d. Susan and Billy Hargett
e. Simpson Russell
f. Darrell Russell
g. Pat Mahan
h. Joe Flippen
- Tom White made the motion that Billy Warren write a
letter to Mary Jane McDaniel asking her if she plans to remain on the Board
since she has missed so many meetings. If she asks to be removed, Billy
should invite Susan Hargett to replace her. Lindsey Stricklin seconded the
motion, and it passed unanimously.
- Betty Champion suggested, and all agreed, that we not
forget people who have restored small structures when we are selecting Capital
Aware recipients. That will certainly become part of our consideration next
year.
- Bill McDonald:
- Reported that an above-ground tomb in the Barton
Cemetery (discovered through the current work on the Barton Riverfront
Industrial Park) shows a death date of 1816. This might very well be the
earliest such date in a local cemetery;
- Reported that Donald Murks has now researched 9,000
names in the Florence City Cemetery and is ready to publish his findings;
- Bill McDonald stated that Nelson Starkey is interested
in assembling a Board comprised of representatives from various interested
organizations to create a comprehensive history of Florence. It was
unanimously agreed that HIP would want to participate in this project.
- Because of time constraints, the compilation of a list
of local craftspeople was postponed.
