Bob Torbert made the motion that the

- Billy Warren
exhibited two DVD’s created by Jim Lake: one features footage
on HPI’s Cemetery Stroll in April, 2007, and the other features
the Bailey Springs Cemetery Dedication on December 8, 2007. Jim
plans to edit the footage in both DVD’s so they will be more
cohesive. Billy also circulated a collection of still
photographs of the Dedication which were taken by Jim Lake.
- Lee Freeman
and Bob Torbert represented HPI at the Bailey Springs Cemetery
Dedication on Saturday, December 8. Both reported that the
ceremony was well-planned and very impressive. In attendance
were representatives of various agencies besides HPI (e.g.,
Alabama Historic Cemetery Preservation Alliance) and descendants
from out-of-state of some of the War of 1812 veterans interred
in the cemetery. All present at today’s meeting agreed that it
was a pleasure for HPI to be the sponsor and fiscal agent for
this excellent preservation project.
- Bob Torbert
circulated photographs of the current state of the Wilson
Cemetery which is adjacent to the Blackberry Trail Golf Course.
He stated that Chris Cassel has received approval from Boy Scout
officials for him to use the restoration of this cemetery as his
Eagle Badge project. Bob will work with him on the project.
Bob reported that the City of Florence has allocated $1,000
toward the cemetery’s restoration. Work on the project could
begin as early as this week. Applause for Bob!
- Bob Torbert
stated that, in 2008, the offer from Mr. Beckman at Florence
Marble Works will be advertised more widely: simple gravestones
@$25 each for churches involved in their cemetery restoration.
- Hester Cope:
- Announced
that she is retiring as Executive Director of Florence Main
Street in January, 2008 (but not as a member of the HPI
Board!);
- Announced
that Ashley Winkle has been named as her successor as
Executive Director of Florence Main Street;
- Reported
that Shoals Community Theatre (an umbrella organization that
includes both the Zodiac and Gingerbread Theatre groups) has
purchased the Shoals Theater building;
- Announced
the recent opening of two stores on Mobile Plaza:
i.
House of Heroes, and
ii.
Downtown Girls; and
- Urged
everyone to purchase at least one Christmas gift at downtown
“Mom and Pop” storeS as a show of support for downtown
Florence.
- Regarding
Florence Main Street, Billy Warren reported that one of Ashley
Winkle’s goals is the establishment of a secure,
climate-controlled art museum in downtown Florence. Since HPI
has already gone on record in support of such a museum, perhaps
there can be collaboration on the project.
- Billy Warren
reminded everyone to visit the public library to see the special
exhibit of the handwritten copy of Clement Moore’s “The Night
Before Christmas” before it is removed on December 31. It is
one of only four copies in existence and is owned by a local
businessman. (It is valued at $286,000.)
- Billy Warren
stated that the terms on the HPI Board of the five people listed
below end on December 31, 2007. Beside each name is an
