Minutes of Meeting, 12-18-06

 

Those present:  Jim Ingrum, Jerry Dowd, Mary Peck, Betty Champion, Hester Cope, Judy Tiffin, Bob Torbert, Lee Freeman, Billy Warren

 

  1. Lee Freeman made the motion that the minutes of the 11-27-06 meeting be approved.  Jim Ingrum seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

     
  2. Billy Warren presented this treasurer’s report:
    1. Checking Account Balance                                           $4,378.53
    2. Forks of Cypress Account                                              3,223.38
    3. FDR Fund                                                                      5,000.00
    4. Riverview Historic Account                                               106.43

 

Jim Ingrum made the motion that the treasurer’s report be approved.  Betty Champion seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

 

  1. Members of the Mayors ad hoc Walk of Honor Committee reported that the committee has completed its work, including the names of the first 16 people who will be honored with a brass plaque for each one mounted on the monuments that will be placed in the Walk of Honor at the new River Walk.

     
  2. In Carolyn Waterman’s absence, Hester Cope reported that Carolyn has still not received any final word on APT’s choice of 12 Bed and Breakfast establishments in Alabama which are to be featured in a special statewide TV program.

     
  3. In Charlotte Dean’s absence, Hester Cope reported that the visit by Edy Hand on First Friday was quite successful.  She had a book signing at Anderson’s Bookland (the book that she co-wrote with the late Buddy Killen), attended a dinner and had another book signing at Coby Hall, and assisted with the lighting of Wilson Park.

     
  4. Bob Torbert made this report about the small cemetery at Sweetwater:
    1. He and his helpers cleaned it on Wednesday, December 13.
    2. Students from the Geography Department at UNA electronically mapped it on Friday, December 15.
    3. Four graves have been identified, with all pieces (except one) of the stonework located. 
    4. Because there is a deep ditch between Highway 72 and the cemetery, it will be difficult to get a crane-bearing truck near enough to the cemetery to move the stones in place.

       
  5. Hester Cope reported that Rose Bauer has opened the Rosetta Stone Art Gallery on North Court Street.  She asked that HPI contribute $200 for paint to assist Ms. Bauer.  Betty Champion made the motion that HPI grant the $200.  Mary Peck seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

     
  6. Hester Cope further reported that:
    1. Backyard Burgers is reopening under the ownership of a person who owns other franchises of this restaurant;
    2. A new gourmet restaurant/bakery is scheduled to open in the former Eva Marie’s location; and
    3. A new art gallery will open in one section of the Stephano’s building, with a French bistro set for the other section.

       
  7. Judy Tiffin asked for HPI’s support in getting a good entry/exit roadway system for the Shoals area.  Everyone agreed that HPI will go on record in support of such a project.

     
  8. Billy Warren announced that Bob Torbert has accepted a three-year term as a member of the Board of Directors of HPI.  Everyone welcomed Bob!  He will be officially installed at the annual meeting in January.

     
  9. After a discussion of the presentation of the Capital Award at the annual meeting in January:
    1. Betty Champion made the motion that Jim Cox, Bob Torbert and Jerry Dowd be given the award in the Individual category.  Jim Ingrum seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.
    2. Hester Cope made the motion that Heath Colcock be given the award in the Commercial category.  Jerry Dowd seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.
    3. Hester Cope made the motion that Linda and Mike Ford be given the award in the Residential category.  Betty Champion seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

       
  10. Billy Warren reported that Col. Newbauer, Executive Director of the Alabama Historical Commission, declined our invitation to speak at our annual meeting in January.

     
  11. Regarding the annual meeting to be held at the Richards Center (the office building on Riverview Drive of the Florence City Board of Education) on Sunday, January 21, at 2:00 p.m., these agreements were reached:
    1. The program will be the showing of a portion of the new DVD’s by David Hope and Shane Wilson related to local historic markers.  Jerry Dowd and Billy Warren will be responsible for the program.
    2. Refreshments will be provided by Board members (cookies:  Jim Ingrum, Jerry Dowd, Hester Cope, Judy Tiffin, Bob Torbert, Billy Warren; non-sweet items:  Mary Peck; beverage:  Betty Champion).
    3. Mary Peck will be in charge of the Registration/Membership table.

       
  12. Billy Warren distributed copies of a pen-and-ink sketch of the Martin-Bounds house, along with a two-page history of the house.

     
  13. Billy Warren distributed copies of the letter which he wrote Susan Hargett in behalf of the Board thanking her for her three years of service as a member of the Board of Directors of HPI.

     
  14. Jim Ingrum, representing one of the actors at our Cemetery Stroll in November, made these suggestions for the next Stroll in April, 2007:
    1. Ask the actors to arrive ahead of the starting time for the Stroll so that all actors may see each other’s performances.
    2. Provide shuttle buses from a downtown parking lot to alleviate the parking problems in the cemetery.

       

These suggestions will be added to those offered at the 11-27-06 meeting so that our Stroll in April will run smoothly.
