of Meeting, 5-24-04
Those present: Judy Tiffin, Betty Champion, Mary
Peck, Margaret Taylor, Bill McDonald, Lee Freeman, Jim Ingrum, Charlotte

- Billy Warren added the phrase "in memory of
Lindsey Stricklin" to the item #6 of 4-26-04 minutes. With that change,
Bill McDonald made the motion that the minutes be accepted. Margaret
Taylor seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.
- Billy Warren made this treasurer's report for
January-April, 2004:

Bill McDonald made the
motion that the report be accepted. Jim Ingrum seconded the motion, and
it passed unanimously.
- Margaret Taylor agreed to check at Bank
Independent about the status of HPI's savings account balance of
$5,113.68. If it can be transferred into the checking account without a
check's having to be written, she will do so. At the June Board of
Directors meeting, we will decide whether to make a donation to a
specific project and/or to move the money (or a portion of it) into an
account that will make more money for HPI.
- Billy Warren reported that Randy Bruce, an
instructor at Coffee High School, is willing to create DVD's of "Follow
the River" for us. We will add a disclaimer to the case holding the DVD
that it might not play on older models of DVD players. Betty Champion
made the motion that we purchase 500 blank DVD's. Bill McDonald
seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.
- Billy Warren reported on two recent tours that he
guided:
- Gifted class students from Hibbett Middle School
(the quad surrounding Wilson Park)
- Reunion of the 1954 class of Coffee High School
(4-hour tour of various sites and facilities)
He stated that he plans to
write up the 4-hour tour and send the report to Steve Holt (Shoals Chamber
of Commerce) and Debbie Wilson (Florence-Lauderdale Tourism Bureau) with
the suggestion that a series of similar tours be organized for local
residents.
- Bill McDonald distributed copies of a document be
authored regarding the proposed restoration of the marker at the
gravesite of Florence's first mayor, Alexander Hamilton Wood, by the
Florence Masonic Lodge.
- Lee Freeman distributed copies of information from
the Internet regarding Mattie Dube, the artist born in Florence in 1861
and trained in Paris. Billy Warren solicited help from Board members in
solving the mystery surrounding her. Primarily, we would like to
determine her maiden name.
- It was agreed that HPI should sponsor the workshop
on cemetery marker restoration this summer. It was further agreed that
the workshop should occur on a Thursday evening. Billy Warren will
check with Camille Bowman to determine the actual date of the workshop.
- Billy Warren reported that Mayor Jordan is
proceeding with plans to move the Indian Mound Museum to the vacated pro
shop in McFarland Park.
- It was agreed that we will not have additional
copies made of the audio CD "Listen to the River" until we have sold the
copies in stock. Billy Warren reported that Benjy Carle at WBCF Radio
made the current copies for us.
- Billy Warren distributed copies of a Landrum
picture of downtown Florence in the 1920's which appeared in the 5-13-04
issue of the Times-Daily. He noted that the picture shows a
streetside clock in front of Rogers Department Store and that the
Florence Rotary Club is planning to place a new one in the exact spot.
- Margaret Taylor tendered her resignation from the
Board. Betty Champion reluctantly made the motion that her resignation
be accepted. Vince Brewton reluctantly seconded the motion, and it
passed unanimously.
- Billy Warren distributed copies of the rules for
the Renaissance Faire poster contest and asked that Board members assist
in circulating the information.
- Bill McDonald reported that Lettie Legion's
kitchen and bathroom at Sweetwater have been repaired.
- Lee Freeman distributed copies of a flyer that
describes the exhibit and the programs at the Florence Public Library in
commemoration of World War II. The library is entering its plans into
the competition sponsored by the History Channel. The prize is a cash
award for the library of $1,200 if the library is declared the winner.
